METADATA FOR HU90 8/28/97 K.J. Hitt Abstract: This is an INFO look-up table containing selected fields from the 1990 Census of Population and Housing Summary Tape File (STF) 3A. The geographic unit is Census block group. Purpose: NAWQA Nutrients National Synthesis obtained the data to try to estimate the number of people with individual wells in areas most vulnerable to nitrate contamination of ground water. Limitations_of_Data: The data have not been reviewed. Mitch Karpman said 8 block groups are missing: State FIPSST County Tract Block group KS 20 113 9885 1,2,3,4 KS 20 113 9886 1,2,3 OH 39 133 6008 4 Entity_and_Attribute_Overview: The fields in the look-up table are: COLUMN ITEM NAME WIDTH OUTPUT TYPE N.DEC 1 FIPSST 2 2 C - 3 FIPSCNTY 3 3 C - 6 CTBNA 6 6 C - 12 BG 1 1 C - 13 HU90 4 8 F 3 17 HU_SMPLCT 4 8 F 3 21 HU_PCTSMP 4 8 F 3 25 WTR_PUB 4 8 F 3 29 WTR_WDRIL 4 8 F 3 33 WTR_WDUG 4 8 F 3 37 WTR_OTHR 4 8 F 3 41 SEW_PUB 4 8 F 3 45 SEW_SEPT 4 8 F 3 49 SEW_OTHR 4 8 F 3 53 BGI 12 12 C - 65 PCT_WELLS 4 8 F 3 69 POP_WELLS 4 9 B - ** REDEFINED ITEMS ** 1 BGIX 12 12 C - FIPSST - State FIPS code FIPSCNTY - County FIPS code CTBNA - Census tract/Block numbering area BG - Block group BGI - Block group identifier (The codes in parentheses are the STF3A data dictionary reference names.) HU90 - Housing unit count (H0010001) HU_SMPLCT - Unweighted sample count of housing units (H0020001) HU_PCTSMP - Percent of housing units in sample (H003A001) SOURCE OF WATER The following is from the on-line STF3A documentation (U.S. Bureau of the Census, 1992): The data on source of water were obtained from questionnaire item H15, which was asked at both occupied and vacant housing units. Housing units may receive their water supply from a number of sources. A common source supplying water to five or more units is classified as a "Public system or private company." The water may be supplied by a city, county, water district, water company, etc., or it may be obtained from a well which supplies water to five or more housing units. If the water is supplied from a well serving four or fewer housing units, the units are classified as having water supplied by either an "Individual drilled well" or an "Individual dug well." Drilled wells or small diameter wells are usually less than 1-1/2 feet in diameter. Dug wells are usually larger than 1-1/2 feet wide and generally hand dug. The category, "Some other source" includes water obtained from springs, creeks, rivers, lakes, cisterns, etc. Comparability--Data on source of water have been collected since 1940. In 1970 and 1980, data were shown only for year-round housing units. In 1990, data are shown for all housing units. WTR_PUB - Public system or private company (H0230001) WTR_WDRIL - Individual well, drilled (H0230002) WTR_WDUG - Individual well, dug (H0230003) WTR_OTHR - Some other source of water (H0230004) SEWAGE DISPOSAL The data on sewage disposal were obtained from questionnaire item H16, which was asked at both occupied and vacant housing units. This item was asked on a sample basis. Housing units are either connected to a public sewer, to a septic tank or cesspool, or they dispose of sewage by other means. A public sewer may be operated by a government body or by a private organization. A housing unit is considered to be connected to a septic tank or cesspool when the unit is provided with an underground pit or tank for sewage disposal. The category, "Other means" includes housing units which dispose of sewage in some other way. Comparability--Data on sewage disposal have been collected since 1940. In 1970 and 1980, data were shown only for year-round housing units. In 1990, data are shown for all housing units. Kerie Hitt converted the files that he provided to INFO for use in our GIS. Revisions: None. Reviews_Applied_to_Data: None. Related_Spatial_and_Tabular_Data_Sets: The data in the table can be related to coverages of block group boundaries by keying on BGI.
