Description:

Abstract:

This is tabular data of areas calculated for GIS coverages and grids depicting the boundaries of land use studies (LUS) and subunit surveys (SUS)/major aquifer studies conducted by the National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) study units.

If a study is a resampled study, even if the boundary did not change from cycle 1 to cycle 2, the area is listed in the file of cycle 1 studies AND in the file of cycle 2 studies. If a study is a new study, it is listed only in the file of cycle 2 studies.

Purpose:

This is one of the ancillary GIS data sets developed to characterize NAWQA ground water studies for national synthesis of water-quality data.

Supplemental_Information:

The coverage naming convention is netcode_bnd (for example, LUSCR1_BND), or netcode_trg (for example LUSCR1_TRG.) The BND coverages represent the entire areal extent of the hydrogeologic unit defined for study. The TRG coverages represent the targeted land use within the overall area described by the BND coverage. The targeted land use coverage is supposed to nest within the overall boundary coverage, but this is not always the case.

Process_Description:

Each ground water study is represented first as a polygon coverage. Then the polygons are gridded at 30 meters to represent the ground water study area in raster format. The raster format is used to derive ancillary GIS data for the studies.

Total area of polygons in each ground water study is the sum of the area of all polygons coded as being within the ground water study.

Total area of grid cells in each ground water study is the number of cells coded as being in the ground water study multiplied by the area of each cell (900 square meters).

Added data for more cycle 2 studies: acadsus3, eiwasus3, lirblusrc1, trinsus4. Resampled studies (linjlusrc1, pugtlusrs1, sacrlusrc1, usnkluscr2, usnkluscr3) already were in the cycle 1 file. The boundaries did not change from cycle 1.

Process_Step:

Process_Description:

Went back and added areas to the cycle 2 file for all cycle 2 resampled studies that did not change from cycle 1 to cycle 2. Before, these studies were listed only in the cycle 1 file.

The cycle 2 file now contains:

Spatial_Data_Organization_Information:
Indirect_Spatial_Reference:

The data set is referenced by SUCODE (NAWQA study unit/network code) and AREAID (ground water study boundary coverage). Two kinds of ground water network polygon coverages exist: 1) BND coverages, which represent the entire areal extent of the hydrogeologic unit defined for study, and 2) TRG coverages, which delineate the targeted land use within the BND.
