Description:
Abstract:

This data set consists of nitrogen inputs from fertilizer, manure, and atmospheric deposition calculated for 500-m buffers around CYCLE 1 GROUND WATER SAMPLING SITES. For national synthesis, several years of N data bracketing the sampling period are averaged to arrive at one number to represent N loads for each site for all the years during cycle 1. Not all of the NAWQA sampling sites are included in the data set; only the sites in ground water networks requested by Tom Nolan were processed.

Purpose:

This is one of the ancillary GIS data layers developed to characterize NAWQA ground water studies for national synthesis of water-quality data.

Supplemental_Information:

The input data set did not include Alaska and Hawaii.

The fertilizer input data set was compiled for 1987 to 2001. During this period, two states--Colorado and Washington--changed the way they reported fertilizer types sold. This change in reporting affected the estimation of nonfarm fertilizer use because fewer categories of fertilizer were reported. For certain years (1997-2001 for WA and 1996-2001 for CO), the estimated nonfarm fertilizer is low. Users should account for this discrepancy when using this data. The farm fertilizer estimates did not show this discrepancy.

Nutrients National Synthesis is averaging 10 years of nonfarm fertilizer data (1992-2001) for GW sites in CO and WA in study units sampled during 1996-98 (FY 1994 studies UCOL and PUGT) and during 1999-2001 (HPGW) to come up with one number to represent N loads for each site for cycle 1 of NAWQA. Study units sampled in those states during other years (FY 1991 studies SPLT and CCPT sampled 1993-95) would not be affected because the sampling occurred before the years when the fertilizer data was changed. For GW sites other than those in UCOL, PUGT, and HPGW, Nutrients Synthesis is averaging several years of data spanning the years of sampling to come up with one number to represent N loads for each site for cycle 1 of NAWQA, as described below.

For fertilizer, Nutrients National Synthesis is representing N load per well buffer as:

FY 91 studies - average of 92, 93, 94, 95 fertilizer values for the buffer
FY 94 studies - average of 95, 96, 97, 98 except for well networks in PUGT and UCOL *
FY 97 studies - average of 98, 99, 00, 01 except for wells in HPGW in Colorado *

*for non-farm fertilizer, all PUGT and UCOL well buffers and
 HPGW well buffers in Colorado will get the average of all 10
 years of non-farm fertilizer
Here is an example of how we would calculate N input for farm fertilizer for a well in a FY 94 study:

FARMN92         =   18,087
FARMN93         =   17,342
FARMN94         =   16,128
FARMN95         =   15,278 *
FARMN96         =   15,153 *
FARMN97         =   14,697 *
FARMN98         =   14,081 *
FARMN99         =   15,974
FARMN00         =   16,948
FARMN01         =   14,972

FARMNAVG        =   FARMN95 + FARMN96 + FARMN97 + FARMN98 / 4
For manure, Nutrients National Synthesis is representing N load per well buffer as:

FY 91 studies - average of 92 and 97 manure values for the buffer
FY 94 studies - 97 manure values
FY 97 studies - 97 manure values
For atmospheric deposition, Nutrients National Synthesis is representing N deposition per well buffer as:

FY 91 studies - average of 92, 93, 94, 95 atmospheric
                deposition values for the buffer
FY 94 studies - average of 95, 96, 97, 98
FY 97 studies - average of 98, 99, 00, 01
On 12/15/05, Tom Nolan supplied a list of 5188 sites, sucodes, and year of study (1991, 1994, or 1997) for cycle 1 nutrients analysis, and all of the sites were in NAWQAPT.

Process_Description:
We changed the land use categories to which FARM fertilizer is allocated. We decided that farm fertilizer should be allocated to pasture/hay and fallow as well as orchards, row crops and small grains. The FARM fertilizer numbers for the buffers were recalculated using the ALLAG6 weighting factor and so the FARM fertilizer averages had to be recalcuated as well. The revised data set is nut_input_092904.txt.

Process_Description:

All sites in NAWQAPT 11/01/2005 were processed using new fertilizer, manure, and nitrogen atmospheric deposition N inputs by county (September 2005 version) and revised county/NLCDE weighting factors based on new 1990 county grid.

Note: (Sept 2006) Some sites listed in Tom Nolan's data set for the Cycle 1 nutrients circular (circular051806.sas7bdat) are missing because Tom added some reference networks after the N inputs were calculated. N inputs for these sites will be calculated soon:

YR   SUCODE          TYPE NDCODE      STAID

1991 albereffo1      fo   few         363529076291701
These sites are in Tom's list but are not in the N inputs data set because they fall outside the county/NLCDE grids and therefore do not have county/land use weighting factors.
