This data set consists of 1992 and 1997 NRI data on selected conservation practices, irrigation sources, and irrigation types for NAWQA ground water study areas (Land Use Studies and Subunit Surveys). NRI characteristics were prepared by Michael Wieczorek.
The NRI was conducted every 5 years from 1977 to 1997, but is now conducted annually. The NRI web site <URL:http://www.nrcs.usda.gov/technical/nri/1997/obtain_data.html> states:
NRI data for four points in time (1982, 1987, 1992, and 1997) are completely comparable and consistent from year to year so that the data reflect true trends and temporal analyses can be made. When making comparisons with 1982, 1987, and/or 1992 data, the 1997 NRI database must be used. Originally released 1982, 1987, and 1992 data may not be consistent with the new database. The historical 1982, 1987, and 1992 data were updated to reflect 1997 technical criteria and protocols as part of the 1997 NRI inventory process. The 1997 NRI database should be considered self-contained in that respect. The 1992 dataset is no longer being supported. The following NRI elements were compiled for NAWQA:

This is one of the ancillary GIS data layers developed to characterize NAWQA ground water studies for national synthesis of water-quality data.
The input data set did not include Alaska and Hawaii.
<URL:http://md-internal.er.usgs.gov/gis/nsynth/nrinlcd.htm>We are assuming NRI is the "truth" for practice and enhanced National Land Cover Data (NLCDE) is the "truth" for land use. The county coefficient for NRI practice multiplied by the area of NLCDE land use in the county gives the total area of that practice in the county.
1. Calculate a county coefficient for each NRI practice:
total area of NRI practice on total area of NRI agricultural land (cropland, divided agricultural land pasture/hay, and orchards) by in the county in the county2. Calculate area of NLCDE agricultural land in the county using 30-m NLCDE grids.
3. Calculate the area of NRI practice apportioned to NLCDE land use in the county:
NRI coefficient * NLCDE agricultural land area for county for county
<URL:http://www.nrcs.usda.gov/technical/nri/1997/obtain_data.html>
Ground water study boundaries are gridded at 30 meters and snapped to the NLCDE. Data processing occurs at 30 meters resolution.
The sum of each NRI variable was determined for the study area by running the GRID command, "zonalstats" with the sum option.
Processing routines are from the NAWQA area characterization toolbox.
The basic procedure is to calculate a sum of the area of each NRI variable in the ground water study.
The area of each NRI variable in the ground water study is calculated by multiplying the total area of the NRI variable in a county by the fraction of all agricultural land in that county in the ground water study and summing the areas for each county in the ground water study.
Here are the weighting factors for pasture/hay and row crops for the ground water study around ucollusrc1b_trg, which contains one county:
GWBNDC1_FIPSLU.AWT FIPS NLCDE AREAKM2 ALLAG6 ALLAG6_KM2 08051 81 0.95400000 0.00616813 154.66590000 08051 82 0.07290000 0.00047134 154.66590000ALLAG6 is the fraction of the total ag land in the county that is in the ground water study.
(ALLAG6 = AREAKM2 / ALLAG6_KM2)According to the NRI table, county 08051 has a total of 249.2890 km2 of IS03 (irrigation source = stream, ditch, or canal).
NRI92-CPRACSKM2.DAT FIPS IS03 KM2 08051 249.28904000The total area of NRI IS03 in the ground water study is calculated as fraction of total agland in the county in the ground water study * total area of NRI practice in the county (applies only to agland categories in ground water study):
ALLAG6 * IS03 for NLCDE 81 + ALLAG6 * IS03 for NLCDE 82 = 0.00616813 * 249.28904 + 0.00047134 * 249.28904 = 1.5376145 + 0.1174899 = 1.6551 km2 of IS03 in ground water studyA limitation of this procedure may occur when the amount of county ag land from NRI differs substantially from the amount of county ag land from NLCDE. If NRI ag land is more than NLCDE ag land, sometimes calculated areas of NRI practices in a ground water study are more than the total NLCDE ag land calculated in the ground water study. In fact, sometimes the calculated areas of NRI practices in a ground water study are more than the entire area of the ground water study.
For example, calculated area of 1992 NRI IT01 exceeds 114.7 km2 total area for ground water study rioglusag1_trg:
TOTAL AREA OF rioglusag1_trg IT01 114.734 km2 118.9 km2County/NLCDE weighting factors for the ground water study are:

________ ______________
52.3 km2 118.9 km2 of IT01 in gw study
of ag land (but NLCDE shows only 52.3 km2 of
in gw study ag land in the ground water study and
total area of ground water study
is only 114.7 km2)
Data users must adjust for this. One strategy is to assume
that all of the ag land in a ground water study is associated
with an NRI practice if the calculated area of the NRI
practice in the ground water study exceeds the calculated
NLCDE ag land for the ground water study.
Processing routines are from the NAWQA area characterization toolbox. (Example below.)

The data set is organized by SUCODE and AREAID. Each NRI variable represents the sum of the area (km2) for that NRI practice for the study area. Values of zero are possible. No missing values should occur because if an NRI practice does not occur in a county, the area assigned to the practice is zero.
