Edition: 1 Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: Map Publication_Information: Publication_Place: Reston, Virginia, USA Publisher: U.S. Geological Survey Online_Linkage: Description: Abstract: During 1991-2001, the National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) program assessed ground water in land use studies (LUS), subunit surveys (SUS), and flow path studies. This is a set of digital maps of cycle 1 LUS and SUS boundaries for NAWQA study units assessed from 1991-2001. Some of the LUS and SUS are being resampled as part of the second decade of NAWQA (2001-2012). Purpose: The purpose of this data set is to describe the hydrogeologic units and predominant land uses that the NAWQA study units used for selecting wells for their LUS and SUS ground-water sampling networks. The boundaries form the basis for computing nationally consistent GIS ancillary characteristics for the ground-water studies, which will be used in the analysis of water quality data. Supplemental_Information: The coverage naming convention is netcode_bnd (for example, LUSCR1_BND), or netcode_trg (for example LUSCR1_TRG). The BND coverages represent the entire areal extent of the hydrogeologic unit defined for study, for example, a major aquifer. The TRG coverages represent the targeted land use within the overall area described by the BND coverage. The targeted land use coverage is supposed to nest within the overall boundary coverage, but this is not always the case. The coverages that were collected during cycle 1 from 1994 and 1997 study units have an ascii metadata file named "covername.met" that contains information regarding each particular coverage. However, almost all of the coverages that were collected during cycle 1 from 1991 study units still have the old-style document.aml metadata. The old-style metadata is in INFO files called "covername.nar," "covername.ref," "covername.att," and "covername.doc." The boundaries for studies being resampled in cycle 2 by the NAWQA study units that began in 2001 are the same as the corresponding boundaries for cycle 1, except for albelusag1, nvbrsus2, trinsus3, sanjluscr1a, sanjlusor2a. The boundaries for the latter changed from cycle 1 to cycle 2. GAFL supplied higher resolution boundaries for gafllusag1. In 2003-2004 the ACFB and SANJ study units also replaced boundaries for several cycle 1 studies to correct problems that had surfaced after the cycle 1 boundaries were collected. In 2003, ACFB sent new boundaries for every LUS. Only SUS1_BND did not change. In 2004, SANJ sent new boundaries for: luscr1a_trg, lusor1a_trg, lusor2a_trg. In 2005, SANT lusrc1_bnd was replaced. It should be the same as sus1_bnd, not the same as sus2_bnd. To accommodate the NAWQA data warehouse requirements for one data record per ground-water polygon, we duplicated some of the coverages. For example, if the overall areal extent of a land use study was the same as the subunit survey boundary, we have two identical coverages, one for the overall boundary of the land use study and one for the boundary of the subunit survey. Analysts should keep this in mind when compiling ancillary data or analyzing water quality data to avoid double counting. The list below shows which boundaries are the same. Here are the ground-water studies included in this data set: !SUID Boundary Notes !---- -------------- --------------------------------------- !acad luscr1_bnd luscr1_bnd = lusrc1_bnd = sus1_bnd !acad Completeness_Report: The data set represents the LUS and SUS boundaries obtained from the 51 NAWQA study units assessed from 1991-2001, including HPGW. The NAWQA study units have the ultimate responsibility for delineating the ground-water study areas and ensuring the accuracy of the coverages and metadata. Lineage: Process_Step: Process_Date: 19970630 Process_Description: Version 1 of 1991 NAWQA LUS and SUS was compiled from the 1995 data aggregation. (Copy of the data request is not available.) Process_Step: Process_Date: 19970805 Process_Description: The NAWQA National Synthesis ground-water teams reviewed the 1991 NAWQA LUS and SUS coverages during summer 1997 and issued a ground-water GIS data verification request in August 1997, which is available at . The NAWQA study units responded to the questions raised in the memo. At that time, in response to the memo, the study units modified existing coverages and submitted new coverages. Process_Step: Process_Date: 19971021 Process_Description: Version 2 of 1991 NAWQA LUS and SUS was compiled from the fall 1996 data request. Guidelines available at Process_Step: Process_Date: 20000315 Process_Description: 1991 NAWQA LUS and SUS coverages were projected to NAD 83. Process_Step: Process_Date: 20010326 Process_Description: Changed 1991 NAWQA LUS and SUS coverage names so that they matched updated sucodes, one coverage for each SUCODE. Repackaged the whole set. Process_Step: Process_Date: 19971105 Process_Description: Version 1 of 1994 NAWQA LUS and SUS boundaries was compiled from fall 1996 data request. Guidelines available at . Coverages were submitted from November 1996 to March 1997. These coverages were considered to be prelimary because the ground-water studies still were in the planning stages. Some studies were dropped later on. Process_Step: Process_Date: 19981231 Process_Description: Version 2 of 1994 NAWQA LUS and SUS boundaries was compiled from spring 1998 data request issued June 18, 1998. Guidelines available at . National Synthesis ground-water team members reviewed the coverages as they came in and provided feedback to the study units. Questions that were not resolved by the study units before the next data aggregation in 1999 carried over into that phase. Process_Step: Process_Date: 20000315 Process_Description: Updated version of 1994 NAWQA LUS and SUS boundaries was compiled from spring 1999 data request issued March 26, 1999. Guidelines available at . As part of the March 26, 1999, data aggregation effort, the National Synthesis ground-water specialists again reviewed the coverages that we already had assembled and came up with another set of comments. Those comments were distributed via email to each NAWQA study unit chief, ground-water specialist, and GIS specialist on April 2, 1999. The questions are listed on . The reviewers tried to ensure that the coverage metadata described details about the ground-water study design, how the wells were selected, and which aquifer was being sampled. We also checked whether the network descriptions made sense and whether they matched the planning data base. We looked at maps of the wells and the ground-water study boundaries to see if the wells looked randomly distributed (not clustered) and if the wells fell within the coverage boundary. A remarkable number of wells fell outside the study boundaries as delineated in the coverages. If the study boundary was not revised so that it encompassed all of the wells, we tried to make sure that the documentation explained why this situation occurred. If necessary, we renamed coverages to match the appropriate network codes and to match the type of boundary represented, a BND (overall area) or TRG (targeted land use). We checked the coverages using checkdata.aml and the metadata using the MP metadata parser. Some of the metadata files still produce errors despite our efforts to have them corrected. Although the sucodes ucollusrc1a-e are listed in the network descriptions, each sucode has only 5 wells, so National Synthesis might combine these into one (ucollusrc1). Five coverages exist for the individual lusrc1a - lusrc1e sucodes and one coverage exists for all of them together (lusrc1). Process_Step: Process_Date: 20010326 Process_Description: Final version of 1994 NAWQA LUS and SUS boundaries was compiled to include minor changes made to SUCODEs and several additional coverages received after March 15, 2000. Process_Step: Process_Date: 200006 Process_Description: Preliminary version of 1997 NAWQA LUS and SUS boundaries was compiled from winter 1999 data request. The data set was released for use in NIT processsing. Guidelines available at . Process_Step: Process_Date: 20010326 Process_Description: Second preliminary version of 1997 NAWQA LUS and SUS boundaries was compiled from fall 2000 data request. Guidelines available at . We plotted the ground-water study boundaries and the wells in the data warehouse as of 3/30/2001. Most of the well locations are within the study boundaries and the wells are distributed throughout the study areas. Process_Step: Process_Date: 20010525 Process_Description: Discovered HPGW coverages were in NAD27. Replaced with NAD83. Also included reports from checkdata.aml. Process_Step: Process_Date: 20020415 Process_Description: Final version of the data set as far as 1997 study units. (HPGWLUSAG2 and HPGWLUSAG3 might be refined later.) This data set replaces the versions distributed previously and was compiled from summer 2001 data request. Guidelines available at . This version contains DLMV, which started in 1999. (YAKI also started in 1999, but did not do any ground-water studies.) We plotted the ground-water study boundaries and the wells in the data warehouse as of 3/01/2002. Most of the well locations are within the study boundaries and the wells are distributed throughout the study areas. If necessary, we renamed coverages to match the appropriate network codes and to match the type of boundary represented, a BND (overall area) or TRG (targeted land use). We checked the coverages using checkdata.aml and the metadata using the MP metadata parser. We tried to correct most of the errors discovered by checkdata, such as dangling arcs and missing polygon labels. Some of the metadata files still produce errors despite our efforts to have them corrected. The metadata files for ACAD and DLMV are not complete. Process_Step: Process_Date: 20041029 Process_Description: Consolidated the release of LUS and SUS boundaries for 1991, 1994, and 1997 NAWQA study units from three separate releases into one release for cycle 1. Reorganized the files to be one archive file for each study unit, instead of one large archive for all 1991 study units, another large archive for all 1994 study units, and a third large archive for all 1997 study units. Process_Step: Process_Date: 20050622 Process_Description: Replaced boundary for SANTLUSRC1_BND. This boundary should be the same as SANTSUS1_BND. Process_Step: Process_Date: 20060621 Process_Description: Replaced coverages for DLMVLUSCR1_TRG and WMICLUSAG2_TRG. The boundaries DID NOT change. However, the values of SUCODE and INSIDE for the NULL polygon were corrected so that the NULL polygon is not counted as being within the study area. SUCODE has been changed to ' ' (blank) and INSIDE has been changed to 0. Process_Step: Process_Date: 20080227 Process_Description: Replaced coverages for ACFBLUSFO1_BND, ACFBLUSFO1_TRG, CCPTLUSAG1A_TRG, and CCPTLUSAG1B_TRG. The boundaries DID NOT change. For the ACFB coverages, the SUCODE was changed from acfbreffo3 to acfblusfo1. For the CCPT coverages, the STAID item was dropped from the .pat files. SUCODE is the combination of the 4-letter abbreviation for the NAWQA study unit plus the ground-water study network code (NETCODE). For example: spltluscr1. When using the coverages, any interior polygon that has a valid SUCODE is considered to be INSIDE the ground-water study area. When analyzing data using the coverages, EXCLUDE the polygons that have a blank value for SUCODE. Any interior polygon that has a blank value for SUCODE is OUTSIDE the ground-water study.
