Identification_Information: Citation: Citation_Information: Originator: Kerie Hitt Publication_Date: 19970715 Title: Lower Susquehanna NAWQA - Overall boundary for the Appalachian Mountain Carbonate Agricultural Land Use Study (LUSAG2_BND) Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: map Description: Abstract: This data set represents the overall boundary of the Lower Susquehanna NAWQA Study Unit's Appalachian Mountain Carbonate Agricultural Land Use Study (LUSAG2_BND). It includes areas underlain by carbonate bedrock in the Appalachian Mountain Section/Ridge and Valley Physiographic Province regardless of land use. This data set will be intersected with a land use coverage to define the areal extent of the targeted (agricultural) land use (LUSAG2_TRG). That resulting boundary (LUSAG2_TRG) in turn will be used with Jon Scott's stratified random site selection program to select ground-water sites for sampling as part of the agricultural land use study. [If you used the well selection strategy described in Circular 1112, simply state that you used Jon Scott's random site selection method. If you DID NOT use the standard well selection strategy, please describe your well selection process.] Purpose: The purpose of this data set (LUSAG2_BND coverage) is to define the areal extent of the aquifer system within which a ground water agricultural land use study will be targeted. This data set was created specifically to define ground-water study boundaries for the Lower Susquehanna NAWQA project and was submitted to NAWQA National Synthesis as part of the 1998 data aggregation request. Supplemental_Information: There is a related coverage called LUSAG2_TRG, which represents the targeted land use (agriculture) within the overall boundaries of the Appalachian Mountain Carbonate area. [The other coverage is a subset of LUSAG2_BND.] [PLEASE INCLUDE ANY PERTINENT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR STUDY DESIGN AND HOW THE WELLS WERE SELECTED. THE MORE DETAILS, THE BETTER. THE STUDY UNIT GROUND-WATER SPECIALIST SHOULD PROVIDE SPECIFIC DETAILS.] Time_Period_of_Content: Time_Period_Information: Range_of_Dates/Times: Beginning_Date: 1991 Ending_Date: present Currentness_Reference: Current as of publication date. Process_Step: Process_Description: This data set was made by compositing a physiographic dataset (Fenneman, 1946) and a geologic dataset (Berg and others, 1980). These datasets were clipped to the boundary of the Lower Susquehanna River Basin Study unit, then were intersected. The geology in the resulting dataset was generalized by adding an item for lithology, and assigning the attributes of siliclastic, carbonate, or crystalline to this item based on the description of the lithologic unit. The final dataset LUSAG2_BND was created by selecting polygons in which the province was App Mtn/Ridge and Valley, and the Bedrock type was carbonate. This boundary will serve as the basis for selecting areas targeted for the agricultural land use study. It will be intersected with the GIRAS land use coverage to determine areas of agricultural land use.
