# METADATA Data Description:
#
# ABSTRACT: This data set contains water quality data modified data used in the subject report used plot maximum
# measured chloride concentrations, and base-flow concentrations of chloride. The data set includes chloride
# yield data (as previously described in dataset 'chloride.sw.load.output.txt'). This data set includes ancillary
# data used to develop two regression models in the report, one to describe variations in maximum
# measured chloride concentration (water years 1993-2004), and the second one to describe the variability
# chloride yields (water years 1993-2003). Chloride yields represent the average yield of the output for
# each surface-water quality site from file 'chloride.sw.load.output.txt'
#
#
#
#
# SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:
# PROCEDURES USED: 1. Chloride maximum concentrations for each site from water years 1993-2004 were determined from
# data in files 'chloride.sw.qw.txt'
#
# 2. Average chloride yields were determined from data in the file 'chloride.sw.load.output.txt'
#
# 3. Base-flow chloride concentrations were determined from associated flow data in data set 'chloride.sw.q.txt'
#
# 4. Road density by road class was determined from the ESRI Inc., 2006, Tele Atlas North America, ESRI data
# and mapsStreetmap, Redlands California, geospatial data set.
#
# 5. Urban minus Agricultural land percent was calculated from aggregate categories in the National Landcover
# dataset (Vogelmann, J.E., Sohl, T.L., Campbell, P.V., Shaw, D.M., 1998, Regional land cover characterization
# using LANDSAT thematic mapper data and ancillary data sources: Environmental Monitoring and Assessment, v. 51,
# p. 415-428) as modified by Nakagaki, N., and Wolock, D.M., 2005, Estimation of agricultural pesticide use in
# drainage basins using land cover maps and county pesticide data: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report
# 2005-1188, 46 p.
#
# 6. Data for Major Point Sources were summed by drainage basin boundary.
#
#	PROCESS STEP: 1. Choride data contained in the file 'chloride.sw.qw.txt' were sorted inversely by station to determine
# maximum measured values.
#
# 2. Chloride yield data from the file 'chloride.sw.load.output.txt' were averaged by each station.
#
# 3. Base-flow chloride concentrations were determined from 'chloride.sw.qw.txt', by sorting the mean daily flow
# data that were merged from the dataset 'chloride.sw.q.txt', and using the lowest flow value associated with
# each sample.
#
# 4. Road density for each type describe below was clipped to the basin boundary in ArcGis 9 software and lengths
# were updated. The sum of the length for each road type for each basin was divided by the area of each basin
# to determine density. Basin boundaries were downloaded from data in the internal USGS web site
# http://water.wr.usgs.gov/pnsp/gis/data/sucovers/bas.html.
#
# 5. Urban minus agricultural land determined from dataset above (see 5.) as summarized in
# http://water.wr.usgs.gov/pnsp/gis/data/swancil/cycle2.html downloaded 3-24-2005.
#
# (Percent of basin comprised of low intensity residential, NLCDe
# Percent basin comprised of high intensity residential NLCDe
# Percent basin comprised of commercial/industrial/transportation NLCDe) minus
#
# (Percent of basin comprised of orchards/vineyards/other NLCDe
# Percent basin comprised of pasture/hay NLCDe
# Percent basin comprised of row crops NLCDe
# Percent basin comprised of small grains NLCDe
# Percent basin comprised of fallow NLCDe)
#
# 6. GIS data sets for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Permit Compliance System location for each HUC
# containing a surface water site selected for this study were retrieved from
# http://www.epa.gov/waterscience/ftp/basins/gis_data/huc/ on about June 2007. The number of major wastewater facilities
# was summed for each basin boundary (described above).
