  Description:
Abstract: This data set was created for the NAWQA principal aquifer study of the glacial aquifer system. This spatial dataset shows the aproximate extent of the glacial aquifer. It is being used for the regional sythesis of data taken from the glacial aquifer as part of the regional ground-water sythesis for the U.S. Geological Survey's National Water-Quality Assessment Program. It combines linework from David Soller's characteristics and extent of glacial deposits east of the Rocky Mountains (USGS DDS-38) and linework from the Geological Society of America's Glacial Map of North America (1945) and the Geological Survey of Canada's Late Wisconsinin and Holocene Retreat of the Laurentide Ice Sheet (1986). These sources had to be combined because the regional synthesis for the glacial aquifer encompassed data from areas of the US covered by both the Laurentide and Cordilleran ice sheets. Soller's work showed only the Laurentide area. This dataset is being used in place of the glacial boundary used by the Prinicpal Aquifers Map because the regional glacial aquifer synthesis required the boundary to also encompass the area of the PUGT and COOK NAWQA studies in Washington state and Alaska.
Purpose: This data set was created to show the extent of the glacial aquifer system.

    Process_Step:
      Process_Description:
The linework for the area of the Cordilleran ice sheet was
scanned from paper maps using a large format scanner. The
scanned lines were then traced on-screen. The resulting linework
was joined to the lineswork from Soller (1998) showing the area
of the Laurentide ice sheet. Any needed lines to close polygons
over Canada were 'eyeballed' by digitizing on-screen. The lines
and polygons were attributed as to source of information using
        the original data as guides.
      Process_Description:
The southern boundary of the glacial aquifer was modified
to follow the extent of the Wisconsinan ice shown on Soller
and Packard, 1998. Originally, the boundary followed the
extent of the unconsolidated deposits shown on Soller and
Packard, 1998. This was done to better match local sources.
