  Description:
Abstract: This data layer was created for the NAWQA principal aquifer study of the glacial aquifer system.
This spatial dataset shows the aproximate extent of 6 sub_aquifer areas of the glacial aquifer system.
One of the sub_aquifer areas used in the report, the Columbia Plateau Glacial aquifer group is not part
of this coverage as the deposits are not technically part of the glacial aquifer system. This data
layer was created specifically for this report. The data layer is shown in figure 6 of the SIR report
       2007-5037.
The sub_aquifer areas take into account the geologic source material of the glacial deposits as a proxy
for uranium or other radionuclides in the aquifer matrix. The sub_aquifer areas should be considered a
generalized depiction, at a regional scale, of the glacial aquifer system in the northern United States
based on the information on surficial geology, bedrock geology, and the late Wisconsinan glacial lobe
positions and flow directions. In addition, boundaries of the glacial aquifer areas were further revised
       by considering (1) the direction of the glacial lobe movement, which accounts for geologic source materials;
and (2) national data on equivalent 238Uranium (eU) and 232thorium (eTh) content from terrestrial gamma-ray
       surveys of near-surface sediments.

Purpose: This data set was created to show the sub_aquifer areas of the glacial aquifer system.

The southern boundary of the glacial aquifer system was modified
to follow the extent of the Wisconsinan ice shown on Soller
and Packard, 1998. Originally, the boundary followed the
extent of the unconsolidated deposits shown on Soller and
Packard, 1998. This was done to better match local sources.
