# METADATA Data Description:
#
# ABSTRACT:
# This data set was used to calculate background nitrate concentrations
# for groundwater of the glacial aquifer system.
#
# SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:
# PROCEDURES USED:
#	PROCESS STEP:
# Data were retrieved from the National Water-Quality Assessment
# Program (NAWQA) Data Warehouse for all wells identified as being in
# the glacial aquifer system. Nitrate data was retrieved as part of a
# larger data set and then subset into a smaller dataset with just
# nitrite plus nitrate as nitrogen, PCODE 00631, (hereafter called
# nitrate)and ancillary data.
#
# The remark columns have a '<' for censored data, an 'E' for
# estimated data, a '-' for measured data, and an NA for missing data.
#
# PROCESS STEP:
# The field parameter, major ion, trace element, and nutrient
# data were retrieved from the NAWQA Internal Data Warehouse
# September 16, 2005. The Conditions used to retrieve the data
# are as follows:
#
# Pre-set Data Warehouse conditions used for retrieving data:
# 1) Eliminate 'V' Coded data
# 2) Groundwater Chemical Environmental Data
# 3) Groundwater Sites Only
# 4) GW POSV Patch Last Value of Day
# 5) Remove 'Set Number' and 'Surrogate' from the search
#
# Additional Conditions for glacial aquifer wells:
# Select SUCODES and create DECODE calculation to only select
# wells that were determined by the Glacial Aquifer Planning Team to
# be sampling from the Glacial Aquifer (based on lithology and
# knowledge of NAWQA study unit teams)

# Process_Step:
# Some wells had more than one line of data - some on the same date.
# The 'GW POSV Patch Last Value of Day' condition took care of most of
# these situations; however, some still remained. For statistical
# analysis, only one line of data per well was desired. To get one line
# of data per well, multiple lines of data for the same well were
# combined into one line as follows:
# 1) Select most recent sample or sample with most data on one line to
# keep
# 2) If data is missing in the sample you chose to keep but is available
# from another sample for the same well, copy it from the other
# sample and paste it in the sample you chose to keep.
#
# After the lines were combined, then the un-needed line was deleted.
# After all wells only had one line of data then the sample data and
# sample number columns were deleted. These lines were no longer
# accurate since the samples were combined into one line.
#
# Process_Step:
# Some wells still had multiple entries because they occured as samples
# in different ground-water networks (SUCODES). Duplicate lines were
# deleted and the SUCODE information was retained in two additonal
# columns ('Su Code Alt 1' and 'Su Code Alt 2'). The most networks
# any well was included in was 3 networks.
#
# The wells that occured in more than one network are as follows (the

# PROCESS STEP:
# The data retrieved had muliple censoring levels for most constituents.
# Censored data is indicated by a '<' or '>' in the remark column
# (remark columns begin with a 'R_' in the final data set.) Glacial
# data will be compared with data for the Cambrian-Ordovician and
# New York-New England aquifers so when dealing with censored values,
# data for these aquifers was also considered. For analysis, censored
# values were handled similar to the method employed by the NAWQA Trace
# Elements National Synthesis Team as follows (original data prior to
# handling censored values is stored in columns with a title begining
# with a 'P'. Post handling of censored values is stored in columns
# whose titles begin with a 'A_'):
# 1) For any constituent that has censored values, insert an
# additional column to the right of the value column (titled with
# the PCODE prefixed by 'P') and label the new column with the
# PCODE number prefixed by a 'A_'.
# 2) Look at all the censored values for each constituent. Identify
# the most common detection or reporting.
# i) Values that are censored above the most common detection or
# reporting limit: delete them and place a '-' in the 'A_' column.
# ii) Censored values including the E-marked values below the
# common detection or reporting limit: convert them to the
# most common detection or reporting limit in the
# 'A_' column.
# iii) E-remarked values that are above the common reporting limit:
# keep that E-remarked value in the 'A_' column.

#
# PROCESS STEP:
# The retrieved Station IDs (STAID) were compared to a complete list of
# STAIDs to determine if any wells were missing fromt he data retrieval
# (due to no data for the requested PCODEs). The following STAIDs were
# missing:
# 414448096412701
# 422831073100101

# 433720088014905
#
# Lines were added to the data file for these missing wells with a
# '-' for all columns of data.
#
#
# PROCESS STEP:
# Corrected site 484502097462301 to have 'su code' = 'rednsus3' and
# 'sucode alt 1' = 'rednsus1' to make the data sort correctly
# Revisions:
#
# PROCESS STEP:
# Ancillary data was compiled from the NAWQA internal GIS resources
# web page: http://water.usgs.gov/nawqa-only/gis/gis_data.html
#
# PROCESS STEP:
# Some wells were in multiple networks, some with conflicting types.
# Only domestic wells in major-aquifer study (MAS) networks were used
# as domestic wells; domestic wells that were in land use (LUS) networks
# were eliminated from the data set. Likewise, only public suply wells in
# MAS networks were used as public supply wells; public suply wells that
# were in LUS networks were eliminated from the data set. Only
# monitoring wells in LUS networks were kept in this dataset; monitoring
# wells in MAS networks were eliminated.
#
# PROCESS STEP:
# All chemical data except nirate was eliminated from the data set.
