# # FILE_NAME: Archival_Summary # DATASET_DESCRIPTION: This data set is a compilation of water-quality data for drinking-water wells # (public supply and domestic) in the Glacial Aquifer System of 12 Midwestern # states. The data were obtained from state agencies in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, # Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South # Dakota, and Wisconsin. The data set contains results for selected analytes # (and associated analytes) determined to be of interest by the Principal Aquifer # Synthesis Team that worked on the Glacial Aquifer System. # # # An excerpt of this data set was used in a side-bar illustration in the Circular # on the Glacial Aquifer System (Warner and Ayotte, in press, 2012) to demonstrate # how data from drinking water wells from state agencies compared to results obtained # from the NAWQA Program wells. # # WARNING! These data originate from sources other than the USGS. # # # WARNING! These data contain coordinate information considered to be private # and confidential by some of the data sources. These data are for # NAWQA internal purposes only. If data are used otherwise, the coordinate # information should be removed! # # # # DATA_SET FORMAT: Tab-delimited ascii file # DATA_SET URL: http://water.usgs.gov/nawqa-only/aq/data_archive/Glacial_sdw_data.zip # #-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- # REPORT TITLE: Selected Water-Quality Data from Drinking Water Wells in the Glacial # Aquifer System of 12 Midwestern States, United States # REPORT SERIES/NUMBER: USGS Open-File Report (OFR 2012-###) # REPORT URL: http://pubs.usgs.gov/ofr/2012/###/ # #------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- # NAWQA STUDY: Principal Aquifer: Glacial Aquifer System # #------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- # # METADATA DATE: September 25, 2012 # METADATA CONTACT: John Wilson # USGS-WRD, Indiana Water Science Center # 5957 Lakeside Boulevard # Indianapolis, IN 46278 # voice: (317) 600-2752 # fax: (317) 290-3313 # email: jtwilson@usgs.gov # # SECONDARY CONTACT: Kelly Warner, Principal Aquifer Lead Scientist for Glacial Aquifer System, Cambrian- # Ordovician Aquifer system, and New England Crystalline Aquifers # USGS-WRD, Illinois Water Science Center # 1201 West University Avenue, Suite 100 # Urbana, IL 61801 # voice: (217) 328-9727 # fax: (217) 344-0082 # email: klwarner@usgs.gov #- # ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- # REPORT ARCHIVAL DATA SET: glacial_aquifer_system_state_drinking_water_data.txt # # This data set contains groundwater-quality data from multiple state sources (non-USGS) for # selected physical properties, major ions, trace elements, nutrients, and radionuclides # for wells completed in the Glacial Aquifer System of 12 Midwestern states. # These data are a subset of a larger data compilation for all states within the boundary # of the Glacial Aquifer System. Time limitations did not allow for the editing and formatting # of data from all states within the Glacial Aquifer System. The 12 Midwestern states were # selected as a trial or pilot for formatting the data for use in future studies of the # aquifer system. # # The data will be used to characterize the water quality of the Glacial Aquifer System # as part of the U.S. Geological Survey, National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Program. # Analysis of the data can be compared with results based on NAWQA wells, many of which are # observation wells used to study land use effects and do not directly represent the drinking # water resource. # # Sample dates range as far back as 1946 to as recent as 2011, but most (98%) sample dates # are from the 1980s or more recent. The distribution of sample dates is shown # below: # Date Count Percent # ----- ----- ------- # 1940s 1 0.01 # 1950s 3 0.03 # 1960s 58 0.6 # 1970s 136 1.4 # 1980s 1,172 12.3 # 1990s 1,989 20.8 # 2000s 5,772 60.4 # 2010s 425 4.4 # ----------------------- # # Constituent concentrations are assumed to be for unfiltered samples, except for total dissolved # solids. The exception to this assumption are data from the Indiana Department of Environmental # Management, whose samples are filtered, and therefore represent dissolved concentrations. # # #--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- END
