Summary

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. The enhanced National Land Cover Data 1992 ("NLCDe 92") served as the primary source for nationally consistent mapped land cover during the first decade of sampling for the National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Program of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Purpose

This data set was used to characterize the land surface and human activities for sites sampled in the NAWQA program. Land cover information was generated for watersheds, riparian zones, well buffers, and ground-water study areas. In addition, selected land cover classifications from the NLCDe 92 were integrated with other data sets that relate to specific categories of land to improve area-weighted estimates of agricultural pesticide application and nutrient loadings referenced to other geographies such as county boundaries.
