Johnson, T. and Belitz, K., 2003, Hydrogeologic Provinces for California based upon established groundwater basins and watershed polygons: U.S. Geological Survey data release, https://doi.org/10.5066/P9UTSDXK.

Summary

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. Ten hydrogeologic provinces of California are represented by a region- class feature called "provinces" within this digital data set. These provinces were identified and defined in the USGS Water Resource Investigation Report (WRIR) 03-4166 (Belitz and others, 2003) titled, "Framework for a Ground-water Quality Monitoring and Assessment Plan for California". Hydrogeologic provinces are generalized areas where hydrology and/or geology have similar characteristics. [...]

Purpose

This digital data set was created to provide a context for developing a statewide, comprehensive ground-water monitoring and assessment program as per the requirements of the California State Assembly bill AB599. The development of this data set facilitated analysis and identification of the priority basins and areas outside basins. This data set was developed from previously developed digital data sets of ground-water basins (California Department of Water Resources, 2002) and watersheds (California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, 1999). The "Source Information" section contains further descriptions. The previously developed digital maps were used to maintain consistency with boundaries recognized by State agencies. Hydrogeologic provinces identify regions of similar geologic or hydrologic properties. The "Process Step" section contains a detailed description of each province or group. Most of the attributes were retained from the two coverages (calwater) and (gw_basins). The "Attributes" section provides more information on attribute descriptions.
