Summary of MODEIN

NAME
modein - Computation of total sediment discharge by the modified
                Einstein procedure

ABSTRACT
MODEIN computes total sediment discharge at a cross section of an
alluvial stream having primarily a sand bed from measured hydraulic
variables, the concentration and particle-size distribution of the
measured suspended sediment, and the particle-size distribution of
       the bed material.

METHOD
The computation involves the extrapolation of the measured
suspended-sediment discharge to represent the total suspended-
sediment discharge and the addition of a computed bedload discharge.
The procedure is applicable only if measured data are available so
it cannot be used directly for design or predictive purposes. It is
intended to be used only at sites where all of the bed material is
finer than about 16 millimeters, and it can be used only if a
significant part of the measured suspended sediment is composed of
particles of the same size as particles in the bed material.

HISTORY
Version 1.4 1998/01/16 - First release of original program as ported
and after code clean-up for use on UNIX workstations.

DATA REQUIREMENTS
Input for MODEIN is generated during an interactive session using
the program MEPDATA. MEPDATA generates a direct access file that is
read by MODEIN. The following data are prompted for by MEPDATA to
       form the MODEIN data set:
               measurement location
               date of measurement
               time of measurement
               water discharge
               top width of cross section
               mean depth in cross section
               water temperature
minimum percentage of both suspended sediment and bed
                  material
particle size at which 35 and 65 percent of the bed material
                  by weight is finer
               concentration of measured suspended sediment
average depth at the sampling verticals
distance between the bottom of the sampled zone and
                  streambed
               Z values
percent by weight of measured suspended sediment
percent by weight of bed material

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
MODEIN is written in Fortran 77. Generally, the program is easily
installed on most computer systems. The code has been used on UNIX-
based computers and DOS-based 386 or greater computers having a math
coprocessor and 1 mb of memory.
