PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (IN KY OH) Ongoing moderate to major category flooding occurring across the Ohio River Valley

Date: Sat, 05 Apr 2025 10:40:41 EDT

Summary: The OKI Water Science Center continues to respond to widespread flooding across the Ohio River Valley with more significant flooding now occurring in central Kentucky.

Heavy rain fell overnight, with a shift north to portions of southern and eastern Indiana as well as central Kentucky. Widespread flooding of varying magnitudes continues for a third day across much of the Ohio Valley with major category flooding now occurring at several locations in central Kentucky.

The OKI WSC has 19 crews out today making measurements in all 3 states. One gage on the Ohio River is down but expected to be repaired by early this afternoon. 83 measurements of discharge were made yesterday at impacted sites in all 3 states including the major category flood conditions at Hopkinsville, KY.

Water quality staff have also been collecting high flow samples for discrete water quality analysis throughout the week. These samples will be analyzed for a variety of constituents, including suspended sediment, nutrients, chloride, and bacteria. In addition to the active sampling efforts, auto-samplers positioned at various sites within OKI are collecting multiple samples during the event.

Measurements, gage issues, and coordination continue with other major federal partners. OKI personnel will also be participating in numerous inter-agency briefings throughout the day.
