Summary: The Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Water Science Center is preparing to respond to widespread moderate flooding forecasted towards the end of the week across a large portion of the Ohio River Valley with the potential for major flooding in some areas.
A substantial rainfall event is expected to occur across a wide portion of the Ohio River Valley with rainfall in excess of 10 inches in areas of western Kentucky and southern Indiana. The first wave of rain will likely occur Wednesday evening and into Thursday morning.
The OKI Water Science Center is planning to deploy 7 crews (14 people) strategically across the basin tomorrow so they are in place to respond to flashy gage locations in the upper portions of important watersheds Thursday morning. These crews will then follow the various flood waves as they propagate downstream to get measurements at gages they pass. More crews will likely join the initial 7 on Friday and work into the weekend.
OKI flood coordination staff have already participated in two interagency flood briefings and will continue communication with important federal and state partners throughout the event.
