Summary: Significant flooding impacts in southern WV
Crews from the VA-WV Charleston Field office responded to high water resulting from up to 6 inches of rain since February 11, with intense rain falling on February 15th and 16th across the southern part of WV.
Three crews of two each were deployed on Feb. 16th to make high water measurements in the Tug Fork, Guyandotte, and New River basins. Roadway flooding limited access to many sites.
On Feb. 17th, a crew of four is working to flag for an indirect measurement at Tug Fork at Litwar, where the previous peak or record (POR) was exceeded by approximately 4 feet. Tug Fork at Welch had also exceeded the previous POR.
Two other crews of two will also be making discharge measurements in the Tug Fork and New River basin on Feb. 17th.
One gage, Panther Creek at Panther, was partially inundated and is currently offline. Repairs are expected later this week.
Further evaluations of the conditions are still underway.
