PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (GA SC) USGS Crews Respond to Flooding in Eastern SC and GA

Summary: USGS crews are responding to flooding that occurred from heavy rainfall in eastern South Carolina and Georgia on Wednesday and Thursday.

USGS crews from the Savannah and Columbia Offices are in the field today making measurements at sites in eastern South Carolina and Georgia affected by the heavy rainfall from Wednesday and Thursday. The National Weather Service reported rainfall amounts up to 14 inches occurred which led to flooding with numerous roads overtopped. Today we sent crews to Ogeechee River at Midville, GA - 02201230, North Fork Edisto River at Orangeburg, SC - 02173500, and South Fork Edisto River Near Bamberg, SC - 02173051. Savannah will send one crew of two people out on Saturday as well to 02197500-Savannah R at Burtons Ferry BR NR Millhaven, GA to collect a rating gap measurement. No gages were damaged or destroyed due to this flooding event. The USGS has been in contact with the National Weather Service in Columbia, SC, the Southeast River Forecast Center, SC Emergency Management Division, and the Orangeburg County Emergency Manager.
