Summary: NWS Major Flood Levels and period of record peaks were exceeded on three rivers in East Tennessee.
A crew form the Knoxville, TN office is making a flood measurement this morning at French Broad near Newport (03455000) which receding but still above NWS Major Flood stage and Pigeon River at Newport (03461500). These sites were also measured yesterday before the sites peaked and became inaccessible. The reported peak at Pigeon River at Newport was 30.55 feet which is approximately 9 feet higher than the period of record peak in 1902 and the crew is verifying that reading today.
The Crew will also try to determine the peak stage at Nolichucky River at Embreeville (03465500) if the site is accessible. This gage is downstream of the Town of Erwin, TN which experience major flooding yesterday and the gage was damaged and possibly destroyed yesterday. This gage is several miles upstream of Nolichucky Dam where Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) issued a Condition Red Warning last night and which currently has a Condition Yellow Warning.
The LMGWSC is having frequent communications with TVA River Operations today concerning any other needs.
