PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (FL) Hurricane Helene Damage

Date: Fri, 27 Sep 2024 15:47:43 EDT

Summary: Storm surge from Hurricane Helene damaged multiple gaging stations operated by the Tampa office in the CFWSC.

Hurricane Helene caused coastal flooding along the entire west coast of Florida. The majority of the coastal sites operated by the CFWSC Tampa office are concentrated in Citrus County which saw period of record water levels from the storm. The storm damaged 20 sites that are operated out of Tampa with 16 of those in Citrus County. These sites were not accessible today due to flooding and road closures. The extent of the damage will be assessed next week.

Three teams were deployed to repair sites in the Tampa area today.

Due to the speed of the storm, the region did not see a high amount of rainfall, so there was minimal inland flooding and will not be deploying teams for high water measurements. One team was deployed to make discharge measurements at new locations under rating development.
