PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (HI) Moderate Flooding in Kauai

Date: Sat, 13 Apr 2024 01:53:31 EDT

Summary: A strong low pressure system northwest of the state brought heavy rain and numerous thunderstorms over the island of Kauai from late Thursday to early Friday morning.

Heavy rain across the island of Kauai caused flooding with significant property damage in some locations in the last 24 hours. No loss of life or evacuations were reported. A second low-pressure system is expected to arrive over Kauai Saturday night into Sunday. As this trough moves through the state from west to east heavy rain is expected for Oahu and Maui County Sunday night into Monday.

No peaks of record were observed at any of the 17 streamgages in Kauai; one streamgage was damaged and remains offline.

All 7 rain gages in Kauai remain operational and recorded 4-12 inches of rain in a 12-hr period.

PIWSC will evaluate conditions through the weekend and determine a field response early next week.
