PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (NV) High flows in Southern Nevada

Date: Sun, 03 Sep 2023 12:59:01 EDT

Summary: Las Vegas inundated with flash flooding

Heavy rain from monsoon moisture caused flash flooding throughout the Las Vegas area on 9/1/23 and 9/2/23. Rainfall totals for the event ranged from <1 to >3 inches in Southern Nevada. USGS did not deploy flood crews for direct discharge measurements because of the flashiness and intensity of the storms, but we are deploying one crew today (9/3/23) to flag three sites in the Las Vegas Wash basin for indirect measurements. We suspect that several sites in the Las Vegas Wash basin will have experienced peak of record flows from this event.

Two gages appear to have sustained damage from the storms and those will be addressed this week. One gage is on the Muddy River basin and one gage is on the Virgin River basin.
