PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (KY) Flash flooding in eastern Kentucky

Summary: Heavy localized rainfall causing ongoing flash flooding in the upper Kentucky River basin.

Up to 9 inches of rain has fallen in eastern Kentucky over the past 24 hours causing flash flooding, particularly in the mountainous areas. At least one gage location in Whitesburg exceeded the period of record extreme early this morning. Several other locations nearby are rising rapidly.

The Whitesburg gage is close to being inundated but is still intermittently transmitting for now. There are two crews (4 people) actively measuring at impacted locations today. Communication with the NWS and local authorities is ongoing.
