Summary: A special low flow measurement was made on the Mahoning River at Youngstown, Ohio.
Northeast Ohio has been experiencing very dry conditions over the past month. In fact the area was designated as being under a D1 to D0 drought conditions. As a result of this, the river stage at the Mahoning River at Youngstown, Ohio went below the rating for a short time.
USGS OKI (Columbus Field Office) sent one crew to make a special low flow measurement at this site, and in fact a check measurement was also made.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Pittsburgh office, was extremely interested in this measurement as they possibly would have had to release more water than expected out of Mosquito lake and/or Kirwan Lake. The measurements were called into the Corps directly, as soon as they were made, which allowed them to make operational decisions on very short notice.
