PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (VA) Flooding in Southwest Virginia

Summary: Flash flooding in Buchanan County, Virginia within ungaged basins.

Localized flood event in Buchanan County, VA resulting from upwards of 4.50 in of rain fall on July 12, 2022. Heavily affected areas of flooding occurred in ungaged basins while nearby gaging location Levisa Fork at Big Rock, VA (03207800) experienced only elevated stages not reaching minor flood stage.

Today there are 2 crews deployed in the vicinity of Levisa Fork at Big Rock, VA gage station flagging HWMs for indirect measurements.

Currently, we are working with FEMA to establish a mission assignment for the flagging of HWMs and indirect measurements at two ungaged streams in Buchanan County, VA east of Grundy, VA: Slate Creek and Dismal River. It is anticipated that 4 teams will be deployed starting as early as Sunday and working through next week to obtain the data.
