Summary: Flooding persists in the Yellowstone River basin.

Widespread major flooding is occurring in central Montana as a result of several inches of rain (2.5-4) on top of snowmelt runoff over the weekend (June 11-12). About half a dozen USGS streamgages in the Yellowstone River basin have are at all-time highs and new POR events. Most streams are forecast to recede by the end of the week, however, streamgages along the mainstem Yellowstone Flathead Rivers are forecast to remain high over the upcoming weekend.

A total of 8 USGS crews (16 personnel) from the Billings and Helena offices are making high-flow discharge measurements today for rating calibration. Additional follow-up measurements are planned for this week. The USGS gage at Rock Cr nr Red Lodge, MT was damaged from floodwaters, and the equipment should be reinstalled and operating in the coming days. All other USGS gages are currently operating.
