PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (AL) LMGWSC responds to heavy rainfall in central Alabama

Summary: Excessive rainfall in central Alabama produced flash flooding at several USGS streamflow gages.

Excessive rainfall overnight produced flash flooding in Jefferson and Shelby Counties which includes the Birmingham area. Local news affiliates reporting radar rainfall estimates greater than 9 inches in the last 24 hours. LMGWSC Tuscaloosa office has 3 crews in the area obtaining highwater measurements and flagging one site for indirect measurement at USGS streamflow station 0242354750 Cahaba Valley Creek at Cross Creek Rd at Pelham, Al for new peak of record. One area NWS Flood warning site reached moderate flooding levels with one other reaching minor flooding levels. One gage assumed damaged by the event and one other site being visited for potential damage.
