PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (NJ) River Flooding

Summary: Major river flooding efforts continue as a result of heavy rain from Hurricane Ida remnants.

The extent of flood work continues to be concentrated in the northern half of New Jersey. Heavy rain (up to 8-10 inches) fell in this region of New Jersey from the remnants of Hurricane Ida that passed through the area on 9/1/2021.

We are still compiling our list of sites that experienced period of rerecord peaks, but so far there have been 8 sites that have period of record peaks from this event. This number may increase. There were also at least 2 long term streamgages that came very close to period of record peaks.

6 streamgages were damaged by floodwaters, 1 has been repaired so far. 5 other streamgages are still operating, but had issues due to and during the flood.

3 crews are out obtaining high water discharge measurements. 3 other crews are out repairing damaged gages and retrieving high water marks to obtain peak stages at all gages that had issues during the flood.

We have been in contact with stakeholders regarding gages that had or are having issues. We have a Mission Assignment with FEMA Region 2 to obtain high water marks.
