PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (LA) LMGWSC Hurricane Ida response continues

Date: Thu, 02 Sep 2021 12:50:16 EDT

Summary: The Lower Mississippi-Gulf Water Science Center (LMGWSC) continues to respond to flooding and damage from Hurricane Ida.

LMGWSC activities include storm surge monitoring, flood discharge measurements, and gage repairs

A crew from Jackson MS completed the retrieval of 3 storm surge sensors in Mississippi and 1 in Eastern Louisiana. The sensor at one site visited in Eastern Louisiana was missing and assumed destroyed. A crew from the Oklahoma-Texas WSC retrieved 2 sensors in Western Louisiana. They were not able to obtain access to a third site. Local crews from Baton Rouge will work on retrieving the remainder of the sensors during day trips when staffing becomes available and when they can safely visit the sites. Any high-water mark work as part of a FEMA mission assignment is on hold due to lack of lodging within hours of the field sites and due to local conditions.

Two crews from Baton Rouge are making high flow measurements in Southeast Louisiana today. No crews in Alabama or Mississippi are making high flow measurements (have transition to normal field trips and operations). Crews from Baton Rouge will also begin visiting damaged sites and working on gage repairs over the next couple of weeks.
