PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (AL LA MS) LMGWSC Hurricane Ida response

Summary: The Lower Mississippi-Gulf Water Science Center (LMGWSC) continues to respond to flooding and damage from Hurricane Ida.

LMGWSC activities include storm surge monitoring, flood discharge measurements, gage repairs, and possible high water mark work.

A crew from Jackson MS is retrieving approximately 5 storm surge sensors today and a crew from the Oklahoma-Texas WSC is planning on retrieving 3 sensors tomorrow. The retrieval of the remainder of the 20 storm surge sensors is on delay until local staff in Baton Rouge can safely make day trips to the sites. We are also in discussions with FEMA on extending the storm surge monitoring mission assignment to include collection of a limited number of high-water mark data in a few communities that were flooded in southern Louisiana.

Three field crews are making discharge measurements in Alabama today and 1 crew is making measurements in Mississippi. A total of 22 discharge measurements were made yesterday (10 in AL and 12 in MS). Three crews made up of 8 LMGWSC Louisiana employees and 1 USGS Wetland and Aquatic Research Center employee were making flood discharge measurements in southern Louisiana today. Most of the crews in Louisiana will transition to gage repair efforts starting tomorrow.
