PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (NY) New York WSC Hurricane Henri Storm-Tide Sensor Deployment

Date: Sat, 21 Aug 2021 21:41:30 EDT

Summary: The USGS in New York deployed 18 storm-tide, wave, and barometric-pressure sensors today in response to the expected landfall of Hurricane Henri.

In response to the expected landfall of Hurricane Henri on eastern Long Island, NY tomorrow, the USGS New York Water Science Center (NYWSC) deployed 12 storm-tide/wave and 6 barometric-pressure sensors in coastal areas of Long Island that are expected to receive major to life-threating coastal flooding from the storm. The sensors were deployed in front of the storm by two teams of USGS scientists, and will be used to record the timing and duration of the expected storm-tide flooding. The sensors will remain deployed until after the storm passes.

USGS scientists are expected to begin recovery of the sensors next week, depending on local conditions, and will download and process the datafiles. As sensors are processed, data will be uploaded and available from the USGS Flood Event Viewer at https://stn.wim.usgs.gov/fev/#2021TropicalCycloneHenri

Locations for sensor deployment were done in consultation with the NHC, and the effort is being funded through a FEMA Mission Assignment.
