PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (NY) Hurricane Henri Storm-Tide Sensor Deployment

Summary: The USGS in New York is preparing to deploy storm-tide and wave sensors for Hurricane Henri, which is expected to cause major storm-tide flooding this weekend in the Northeast.

The USGS New York Water Science Center (NYWSC) is closely monitoring the track and intensity of Tropical Storm Henri. Currently, the storm is forecast by the National Hurricane Center (NHC) to become a Hurricane and make landfall on the New England coastline later Sunday, moving just east of Montauk Point, NY.

USGS scientists, in consultation with the NHC, are preparing to deploy temporary storm-tide and wave sensors in front of the storm in areas forecast to receive the highest storm-tide flooding. It is expected that two teams from the NYWSC will deploy up to 12 storm tide/wave sensors and 6 barometric pressure compensation sensors across the eastern third of Long Island, NY to record the timing and duration of the expected storm-tide flooding.

Currently, the USGS teams are readying the needed supplies equipment for this effort, and sensor deployment is expected to take place during tomorrow morning and afternoon. This effort is being funded through a FEMA Mission Assignment.
