Summary: Local Flash flooding in eastern New York from 3-5 inches of rain.
Local flash flooding occurred in Rensselaer and Columbia counties of eastern NY Wednesday evening (July 14) as a result of slow moving thunderstorms producing 3-5 inches of rain in 1-3 hours on soils saturated from several inches of rain during the past week. There have been several reports of flooded roadways and local evacuations. A provisional peak of record occurred at the USGS streamgage Valatie Kill nr Nassau, NY (1990-current; drainage area = 9.84 mi2). The stream is receding overnight and a crew from the Troy office will be on site July 15 for follow-up discharge measurements and to survey an indirect measurement of peak discharge.
