PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (NY) Flash flooding in southeastern New York.

Summary: Flash flooding in southeastern New York and Long island.

Flash flooding occurred last night and this morning (July 8-9) in
southeastern NY and Long Island as a result of heavy rain in advance
of Tropical Storm Elsa's northeastward path along the East coast.
A total of 2-5 inches of rain resulted in the USGS streamgage, Bronx
River at Bronx, NY reaching the NWS Minor Flood category. At 11 am,
Tropical Storm Elsa is about 10 miles off the coast of eastern Long
Island moving northeast at 30 mph with 40-50 mph wind gusts along the
coast.

A total of 8 USGS crews (16 personnel) from the Coram, Milford, and Troy
offices are making high-flow discharge measurements today for rating
calibration. All USGS gages are currently operating.
