PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (KY) Major category flooding continues in Kentucky

Date: Wed, 03 Mar 2021 10:15:11 EST

Summary: Major category flooding continues on the Kentucky River and is now also occurring on the Rolling Fork River.

Three days after a significant rainfall event, the major category flood wave occurring on the Kentucky River continues to impact several locations. Peak of record events have been documented at at least two locations. The Rolling Fork River further to the west also has at least one location in major category flood conditions.

Two USGS river sites on the Kentucky River are still out of commission after they were overtopped. Crews were able to make measurements at those locations to document conditions despite the loss of the gages though.

Currently 5 USGS crews (10 people) from the Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Water Science Center are measuring high flows. The primary focus today will be on the Kentucky River and the Rolling Fork River.

USGS has been in contact with numerous State agencies in Kentucky as well as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the National Weather Service.
