PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (AL) Continued flood response in southern Alabama

Summary: Crews continue to collect direct & indirect measurements and repair gages following the significant flood event following Hurricane Sally

Extensive coastal and inland flooding was caused by Hurricane Sally across southern Alabama.

While streams impacted by the event have not generally reached the levels recorded after Hurricane Georges in 1998 (https://www.weather.gov/mob/georges), at least two LMG WSC stations have exceeded previous peaks.

Currently, 4 stations are damaged due to the storm, though one of these should be repaired within the hour.

8 LMG WSC personnel are on site today making direct & indirect measurements and repairing gages.

Starting Monday, 7 personnel from 6 different offices and 3 different WSCs (LMGWSC, SAWSC, and CFWSC) will converge on the affected area to flag and survey stations for indirect measurements in southern Alabama and the panhandle of Florida. Thanks to everyone involved for the help!

USGS personnel have been in contact with local National Weather Service and Corps of Engineers offices regarding gage outages, measurements, and availability of LiDAR data for indirect measurements.
