PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (NY) Local and Flash Flooding in eastern New York

Date: Wed, 05 Aug 2020 11:25:40 EDT

Summary: Local and Flash Flooding in eastern New York

Local and flash flooding occurred in eastern New York Tuesday afternoon and evening as a result of 3-7 inches of rain in less than 12 hours as Tropical Storm Isaias races northward thru eastern New York. Two USGS gages briefly reached NWS Minor Flood Stage last night along the East Branch of the Ausable River in the Lake Champlain basin of northern NY and the Beaver Kill in the Catskill Mtns. Streamflows are receding at many gages with a few locations remaining near bankfull thru Wednesday. Low streamflows and very dry antecedent conditions limited rises on large mainstem rivers.

A total of 9 USGS crews (13 staff members) from the Milford, Troy, Ithaca, and Potsdam offices have made about 25 high-flow discharge measurements for rating calibration yesterday and today. All USGS gages are currently operating. This is the last Project Alert for this high-flow event.
