PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (NY) Local and Flash Flooding in eastern New York

Date: Tue, 04 Aug 2020 18:31:30 EDT

Summary: Local and Flash Flooding in eastern New York

Local and flash flooding is occurring in eastern New York Tuesday afternoon and evening as a result of 3-5 inches of rain during the past 12 hours as Tropical Storm Isaias races northward thru eastern New York. One USGS gage is forecast to reach NWS Moderate Flood Stage Wednesday morning along the East Branch of the Ausable River in the Lake Champlain basin of northern NY. Two USGS gages along Schoharie Creek and Beaver Kill in the Catskill Mtns are forecast to exceed NWS Minor Flood stage early Wednesday morning. Several additional USGS gages throughout eastern New York are forecast to be near bankfull stages overnight before receding on Wednesday. Low streamflows and very dry antecedent conditions have limited rises on large mainstem rivers.

A total of 8 USGS crews (12 staff members) from the Milford and Troy offices have made 14 high-flow discharge measurements Tuesday afternoon for rating calibration. Several additional measurements are planned for early Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning. All USGS gages are currently operating.
