PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (IA) High Water/Flood Activities within the Central Midwest Water Science Center

Summary: Crews responding to high water in Central and Eastern Iowa.

Strong storms passed through parts of the Iowa starting this past Sunday to Monday bringing heavy rainfall in territories covered by Iowa City office within the Central Midwest Water Science Center (CMWSC). Areas in the Cedar River and Iowa River basins between Waterloo and Cedar Rapids received up to 5 inches of precipitation in 48 hours.

One specific site was within .9 ft from the peak of record and the measurements being made by field crews were at levels over nearly a foot higher that previously measured.

Iowa City Crews are measuring and have measured tributaries to the Cedar River basin today.

No gages have been damaged or destroyed.

The crews from Iowa City will be measuring sites for several days as the crest works it way downstream on both the Cedar River and Iowa River basins.

Forecasts show little precipitation until this coming weekend. This event may require response through next week if the rain hits the same river basins.

USGS staff are in contact with NWS via NWSChat informing them of measurements as they are being made.
