PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (MI) Continued flooding in Lower Michigan

Summary: Minor to Major Flooding is still occurring on many streams in Lower Michigan

Strong storms passed through parts of the Midwest starting last Thursday bringing heavy rainfall in some locations served by the Upper Midwest Water Science Center. Much of lower Michigan had received 4-8 inches of rainfall by Tuesday May 20.

There are currently at least 15 NWS reporting sites at minor flooding stage, 5 sites at moderate flooding stage, and 1 un-gaged site at Comstock Park where the Grand River is at major flood stage this morning. The Grand River at Grand Rapids appears to be peaking currently, as does the downstream gage at Grandville. The Tittabawssee River at Midland has receded nearly 9 feet from its period-of-record peak on May 20 (recurrence interval exceeded 0.002). The Saginaw River at Saginaw, located downstream of Midland, peaked yesterday as well.Two upstream impoundments above failed Sanford and Edenville Dams appear to be nearly emptied this morning with water remaining in just the traditional river channels.

Today, are there are three single-person crews from the Lansing Field Office measuring other streams that are still running high in southern Michigan.

Forecasts show little precipitation for the next two days although next weeks forecast is less certain.

All USGS Michigan Staff will be standing down after today.
