PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (OH) Minor to moderate flooding in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana.

Summary: Minor to moderate flooding is occurring in parts of Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana.

Minor to moderate flooding continues in parts of Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana due excessive rainfall during this week (May 18-20, 2020). Parts of these three states received anywhere from two to five inches of rain this week. The hardest hit watersheds were the Scioto, Muskingum, Tiffin and Olentangy river watersheds in Ohio, the Licking River basin in Kentucky and the Maumee River basin in northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio. The Tiffin River in northwest Ohio went into "major" flood category (NWS terminology) during the early morning hours of May 21, however that river is back down into the moderate category.

The only site that reached a peak of record stage was the Olentangy River in Columbus, however that site only has about 5 years of record.

Two gages in Ohio were not operating during this event, and the sites were quickly repaired with no damage caused by flooding.

For Ohio, yesterday we made high flow measurements on the Maumee, Scioto and Muskingum rivers. Today we have three crews out measuring high water. The crest on the Scioto River is being followed and measured. We also have a crew measuring the Tiffin River today. A final crew is measuring sites in the Paint Creek watershed.

For Kentucky, high water measurements were made on the Licking River watershed yesterday, however no special operations are occurring today.

For Indiana, today, one crew is measuring the St. Joseph River (a major tributary to the Maumee River) near Newville Indiana which is in moderate flood category.

We have been in contact with respective cooperators from both states and the National Weather Service.
