PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (MI) Continued flooding in Lower Michigan

Summary: Minor to Major Flooding is still occurring on many streams in Lower Michigan

Strong storms passed through parts of the Midwest starting last Thursday bringing heavy rainfall in some locations served by the Upper Midwest Water Science Center. Much of lower Michigan had received 4-8 inches of rainfall by Tuesday night.

There are currently at least 20 NWS reporting sites at minor flooding stage, 1 site in moderate flooding stage, and the Tittabawassee River at Midland is still in major flood stage this morning, although it has receded three feet from the peak mid-day yesterday. Preliminary calculations using provisional discharge measurements made yesterday, indicate that a recurrence interval of 0.002 was exceeded. Two two-person crews were on site measuring streamflow and installing a rapid-deployment gage yesterday and a two-person crew is measuring discharge at Sagainaw River at Saginaw today and hopes to have time to make a recessionary measurement at Midland this afternoon.

Elsewhere, there are four single-person crews measuring other streams.

Forecasts show little precipitation for the next few days.

USGS staff are in contact with NWS via NWSChat often informing them of measurements as they are being made.
