PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (KY) Minor to moderate flooding in Kentucky and Ohio

Summary: Minor flooding in central Kentucky and central and western Ohio.

A slow moving low pressure center with training thunderstorms dumped widespread two to five inches of rain overnight in portions of central Kentucky and central and western Ohio. In Kentucky, the hardest hit area was the Licking River basin, while in Ohio, numerous river basins including the Scioto, Great Miami and Olentangy River basins were hardest hit.

This is considered a minor flood event. Antecedent ground moisture conditions in some of these areas was slightly dry, therefore impacts of this flooding event were not as drastic as they could have been.

One gage in central Ohio has a float tape stuck, otherwise all gages in Kentucky and Ohio are operating properly.

Due to the current situation, Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Water Science Center had just begun normal field operations in earnest. For Kentucky, we will be sending 2 crews of two people to measure high water on the Licking River. For Ohio, five single-person crews will be out measuring high water as part of their normal field trip. Ohio crews will be measuring sites primarily in the Scioto and Rocky river basins. Precipitation should be coming to an end today for the entire three state region, but may return to the area Thursday as the low meanders back north.

All cooperators from both states have been notified.
