PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (OR WA) Flooding in the Pacific Northwest

Summary: Major flooding is occurring in the major rivers draining the Central Cascade Mountains and in SE Washington and NE Oregon.

The rain continues to fall in the Pacific Northwest as a front is currently stalled over the area dumping 4-6" of precipitation in the mountains and 0.5-1.5" in the lowlands over the
last 24 hrs. A flood warning currently exists for most of the rivers draining the west side of the central Cascades in Washington. Southeast Washington and Northeast Oregon is also under a Flood warnings. Umatilla County in Northeast Oregon had declared a flood emergency. The previous peak of record for the Umatilla River above Meacham Creek (Sta. No. 14020000), which has peakflow data since 1933, was 6,220 ft3/s. Currently (Thursday afternoon) the flow is over 13,000 ft3/s and is still rising. In the river forecasts
for the next 3 days for Washington, 3 NWS forecast river gages are predicted to be in the Major Flood category, 7 are predicted to be in the Moderate Flood category, and 11 are predicted to be in the Flood category. Most of the rivers will crest today or tomorrow. All the Field Offices in Washington are sending crews out to make discharge measurements and repair down gages today and tomorrow and some will be out this weekend.
