PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (WA) Flooding

Date: Fri, 31 Jan 2020 11:45:35 EST

Summary: Major flooding forecasted for NW portion of Washington State

An Atmospheric River is forecasted to hit the West coast somewhere near the Washington-Canadian border bringing warm temperatures and lots of moisture to NW Washington. Currently (Friday morning) the Skagit, Snoqualmie and Tolt Rivers are forecasted to reach major flood stage Saturday evening. Several other rivers in NW Washington are forecasted to exceed the Moderate Flood Stage and Flood Stage categories. Late Saturday night a cold front is forecasted to move in and drop the freezing level. This will reduce the runoff from the mountain rivers and reduce the river stages below flood level. The Northwest Washingtion Field Office (Ferndale) will be activated this weekend and two streamgagers from the Western Washington Field Office (Tacoma) will be joining the effort to maintain operation of the network and obtain discharge measurements.
