Approximately 3,000 gallons of diesel fuel were released into the river when a train derailed near Leona, ID causing a locomotive engine to enter the river at approximately 9 p.m. 1/1/2020. Containment booms have been deployed at the site of the derailment and near the town of Bonners Ferry downstream.
Burlington Northern, Idaho Department of Environmental Quality, Idaho Fish and Game and US Fish and Wildlife are on site.
USGS IDWSC has offered assistance through the use of rapid deployment gages, water quality monitoring probes, and sampling if needed. Crews in the USGS Post Falls Field Office are on standby in case they are needed. We are in communication with the other agencies involved and will provide updates as available.
