Summary: Significant rain and wind from Hurricane Dorian is expected to arrive in southeast Virginia later this evening and continue throughout the day Friday.
The VA-WV WSC has completed the deployment of storm tide sensors and Rapid Deployment Gages (RDG) along the southeast Virginia coast. There are currently 5 RDGs and one wave transect in place and collecting water level and meteorological data. NWS is now forecasting 6-10 inches of rain for this area starting late this evening and continuing throughout the day Friday.
There are currently two teams (4 individuals) measuring streamflow and water-quality condition at multiple stations in the 12 station Hampton Roads Urban Monitoring Network. These stations are situated in Norfolk, Hampton, Portsmouth, Suffolk, VA. Beach, and Chesapeake. Primary focus is to measure discharge, stage, and velocity across a range of stages. There will be nutrient and suspended sediment samples collected during the storm period via automated samplers.
Recovery of the wave transect sensors, located in Sandbridge, VA, is expected to take place as early as this weekend, depending on the severity of the damage and access to the sensors. (https://wtkr.com/2019/09/05/mandatory-evacuation-ordered-for-sandbridge-ahead-of-hurricane-dorian/amp/)
