Summary: USGS South Atlantic Water Science Center (SAWSC) continues deploying storm tide sensors in the Carolinas in preparation for Hurricane Dorian.
The USGS South Atlantic Water Science Center (SAWSC) comprises the states of North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. All three are engaged in activities in preparation for Hurricane Dorian.
By state:
North Carolina: USGS has 14 persons in the field today deploying rapid-deployment gages (RDGs) and storm surge sensors under a FEMA mission assignment. As of this report, 8 RDGs and 31 water-level sensors have been installed so far. Deployment expected to be complete on Wednesday. A state of emergency in coastal counties has been declared.
South Carolina: USGS has 15 persons in the field today deploying RDGs and storm surge sensors under a FEMA mission assignment. As of this report, 4 RDGs and 27 storm-tide sensors have been installed so far. Evacuation of 8 coastal counties is ongoing. The Charleston office is closed today.
Georgia: USGS personnel have completed deployment of 55 storm surge sensors and 12 RDGs along the Georgia coast as of noon Sunday. Preparation for recovery operations is beginning. All personnel have returned home. The six coastal counties of Georgia are under mandatory evacuation. The Savannah office is closed today.
