Summary: USGS South Atlantic Water Science Center (SAWSC) continues preparation for Hurricane Dorian
The USGS South Atlantic Water Science Center (SAWSC) comprises the states of North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. All three are engaged in activites in preparation for Hurricane Dorian.
By state:
North Carolina: USGS has 14 persons in the field today deploying rapid-deployment gages (RDGs) and storm surge sensors under a FEMA mission assignment. A state of emergency in coastal counties has been declared. The State Emergency Management office is issuing an access letter for field teams for recovery efforts.
South Carolina: USGS has 14 persons in the field today deploying RDGs and storm surge sensors under a FEMA mission assignment. NHC is expecting surge of 4' to 6' along coast. Evacuation of 8 coastal counties is begining. Schools and state offices closed starting tomorrow. Interstate 26 from Charleston inland will have lane reversal starting noon today.
Georgia: USGS personnel have completed deployment of 55 storm surge sensors and 12 RDGs along the Georgia coast as of noon yesterday. All personnel have returned home. The six coastal counties of Georgia are under mandatory evacuation as of 08:00 am today. Tomorrow at noon, Interstate 16 will reverse flow at noon on Tuesday. All Savannah employees are developing personal plans for dealing with the storm.
