Summary: Historic Flooding occurring on the Arkansas River in Oklahoma.
Due to high rainfall amounts in the month of May and reservoirs now releasing large quantities there is historic flooding occurring on the Arkansas River in Oklahoma. We are currently working with the Corps of Engineers to measure inflows and outflows of several reservoirs as well as many stations along the Arkansas River. The Corps is very concerned with several lakes and the Arkansas navigation channel.
The Arkansas and Cimarron river basins are currently in major flood stages.
Three streamgages along the Arkansas River have been inundated. We have installed rapid deploy gages at these sites. There have been 9 peaks of record at long-term streamgages. Rating extensions have been completed at five stations. There are currently 11 stations classified by the National Weather Service as in Major flood status. This large scale flooding is predicted to carry-on for several days.
Currently 8 USGS crews (16 individuals) are in the process of conducting flood measurements in Northeast and Eastern Oklahoma.
